Sometimes We Need a Little Reminder

Sometimes We Need a Little Reminder

Posted on 20. Apr, 2009 by joefission in Link Building, Tips

After building hundreds of web properties, I’d like to think that I have things boiled down to a science, but every once a while, I still need a kick in the pants to remind me of what works.

I was going through some 100-word posts that I had an outsourcer write a few months back, and I decided to plunk them down into Linkvana on a few older domains that I haven’t touched in months. I don’t pay too much attention to these domains because they’re not big earners — maybe a sale every three weeks.

It shouldn’t have come as a surprise, but lo and behold, after dripping in a few links, each of these five domains started making sales again. After three days, there have been a total of 12 new sales, an increase of 1000 percent or more over “normal.”

So, a friendly reminder. You’ve heard of all the basic link building advice:

  • Build links from relevant sources
  • Don’t link to bad neighborhoods
  • Watch your link speed
  • Maintain an organic pattern
  • Link to your home page and inside pages
  • Focus on long-tail keywords, but don’t ignore competitive phrases
  • Vary your anchor text
  • In text links are preferable

But don’t forget link currency and don’t completely ignore those old domains. It’s obvious that Google values authority, but they also value currency, whether it’s with an aged domain or not.

For example, dominating a key phrase in days is simple with a tool like SE Nuke or Brute Force SE, but the rankings are short-lived. But you can also get the same speed of ranking by re-energizing your aged domains.

I used LinkVana because I had the posts handy, but this is also a perfect application of Article Marketing Automation. Write and spin one good blog post, and you can point several links to a dozen domains with under an hour’s effort. And that hour might just pay off handsomely!

    Hi

Thanks for the valuable information. I’m interested to know what you consider to be too many links? Is one likely to create too many by blog commenting (as I am now!) or is this only likely to happen with some kind of automated spamming service?

    many thanks

I don’t think I’ve found the ceiling on number of links, with obvious caveats. If you have 5,000 links pointing to your “buy viagra now” site, it looks a bit peculiar, but I wouldn’t worry about it otherwise, provided you adhere to the bullet points above.

I also wouldn’t worry about blog comments, unless you’re using spamming software. You’re likely to build links gradually in subjects that are interesting and relevant to you, so that’s a normal linking pattern (even if you’re using something like Comment Kahuna). Plus, the pattern mimics that of professional bloggers — although I have zero proof of this, I strive to build high-quality links early because on investigation, it helps me blend in. So things like blog directory submissions, even though the links might not be powerful in themselves, are the kinds of links that bloggers try to acquire, so I figure they help disguise the marketing intent of some of my properties.

    A couple of questions here:

    1. Aren’t you paying hosting and domain renewal charges for these old domains?

    2. Do you recommend using linkvana over parking domains?

Yes, I do. But these days, you can cram 20 niche blogs under one hosting package — so it doesn’t take many sales to be profitable.

I’ve never parked domains, so I can’t comment on that. My advice would be to stick with your strengths. Mine are quickly building and monetizing, so I prefer that to parking, but everyone will differ.

One question Joe - How do you search for old domains? Archive.org doesn’t seem to work for about a year or longer. How to check the age and how old should it be to be good?

So 20 niche blogs with ‘link vana’ active and all of them ’selling’ same / similar products is the strategy. What about the money you spend on promoting each of these domains? Or Linkvana is the only SEO method being used?

How do other systems like connectcontent (or was it contentconnect) and linkingpress compare with LinkVana?

SE Nuke or Brute Force SE can prove best if they are used properly. I have experimented with this.

I’ve used both Brute Force and SE Nuke with mixed results. You get great rankings quickly for low-competition keywords, but you lose those rankings just as quickly if you don’t follow up with more link building.

They’re great if used properly, but they also result in a lot of garbage sites and spam — it’s just too tempting. For the right type of site (I’d never use these products to promote a flagship site), when used responsibly, they can be helpful as part of your strategy.

A reminder like that is always good. More than once I’ve found myself so engulfed in what I was doing I lost the sight of the big picture. By going back to the basics, we get the precious perspective we need in order to make informed decisions :)

I’ve read somewhere recently that you should get links from all over the world. That 20 links from 20 different countries are worth a lot more than 20 links from the US.

I agree with your tips, linking to a bad neighborhood may end not only in drastic drop in PR but also becoming completely ignored by Google - and that is worse that can happen. Sometimes it is not easy to check the surroundings, especially when some sites are not so bad at all, but becoming very bad in time (e.g. also by adding links from bad neighborhood). I’m glad that you show people some handy advices, that is something that could really help a lot of people.

Once again, you’ve told me something I did not know.

I know that link building is something we need to do on an ongoing basis. But, I was not aware that simply adding new links to an old site would “refresh” it in the SERPS.

    Thanks for the info.

Agreed, using AMA as well and so far havent abused it and will give it a solid six months before making comment.

Talking of abuse that’s the result when you give very powerful tools to people who have no understanding of the bigger picture.

Its just so easy to abuse the tools! Is there an answer? Probably not, who actually said “common sense isnt very common!” they were right!

I agree that linking to deeper inside pages is growing more important. This can come back to bite you if you don’t do enough of it.

  32. Here is the situation. I am a step-mom of 3 young adults. I have a great relationship with all of them. According to them, I “spoil” them. While not taking over the parenting, I treat them as if they were my own kids…they are #1. My job is to help my husband be the best dad he can be. The ex and I are not friends, but we are friendly towards each other. Everyone gets along…for the most part because that benefits the kids.

  33. I’ve actually just started using #1 on one of my personal blogs, with the intent to do it on my business blog. I’ve found that prompting or asking for readers’ input is getting them to actually take the time to leave a comment. In essence, you’re inviting them to provide their thoughts and expertise, thus making them feel valued…it’s an ego thing ;)

Although it is expensive, if you have the money to invest in your business and need something that will help put your SEO and link building on autopilot, then this is a great service. Also Dave Kelly is always quick to reply with support questions, and he is always very polite and friendly too, which makes a big difference
